As a child, I was often told to stop playing with my food. Instead, I started playing with words. Puns, rhymes and other forms of whimsicality slipped into greeting cards, poems and childrens stories from an early age. Besides possessing a knack for words, I was an avid doodler. While working as an account coordinator at an advertising agency in Los Angeles, I would occasionally pass silly drawings on to a co-worker, who finally suggested that I take my doodling seriously. Ten years later, living in Northern California with a file full of wacky card ideas, I created a tiny greeting card company called TUBA LOONS, a playful name that popped into my head and stuck there. My characters include knobby-kneed dogs, birds, vultures, fish...even pickles... along with bearded men in black coats whale watching atop the “whaling wall,” Ida Bublick and her knishes, and Moses with his other tablets! Often referred to as the Jewish “Gary Larson” (who’s work I greatly admire), I create greeting cards that have been described as “witty,” “one-of-a kind” and humorously “off the wall.” "Customers plant themselves in front of Carol’s cards and roar with laughter,” remarked Tracy, an employer of Quicksilver Mine Co. in Forestville, California. “And it’s infectious!” she added. |
